The Ljuča River: Vital Artery of Plav Valley

Origin and Course

The Ljuča River, born from the confluence of the Vruje and Grnčar rivers downstream from Gusinje, serves as the primary outflow for the picturesque Plavsko Lake. As it flows through the fertile Plav Valley, it traverses an area rich in alluvial soil, which is ideal for agriculture. The river valley spans approximately 750 hectares, including 300 hectares of marshland. This marshland has been transformed through extensive land reclamation into the largest alluvial agricultural complex in Montenegro.

Agricultural Wealth

The climatic conditions in the Ljuča Valley, with an average annual temperature ranging between 7.2°C and 7.6°C, are conducive to growing crops that thrive in cooler temperatures. Modern agricultural techniques have further enabled the cultivation of crops that require higher temperatures, such as watermelons, melons, peppers, and tomatoes. The combination of warm days and cool nights enhances the unique aromas and quality of the agricultural products from this region.

Hydrological and Ecological Significance

As the main outflow of Plavsko Lake, the Ljuča River plays a crucial role in maintaining the hydrological balance of the Plavsko Lake basin and its connection to the Lim River. This river is integral to the hydrological and ecological health of the Plav Valley. Anglers find their dreams fulfilled here, regardless of their fishing techniques. They can engage in thrilling battles with trophy-sized huchen, pike, or the endemic mud trout, or test their skills against the cunning grayling, unpredictable brown trout, delicate chub, or elusive nase.

Prime Fishing Destination

The waters of the Plav municipality allow fish to reach their genetic maximums. For example, huchen have been caught weighing up to 41 kg, grayling up to 2.5 kg, and mud trout up to 10 kg, though they are usually caught weighing between 3 to 6 kg. Currently, huchen and pike are under a fishing ban, so any caught huchen and pike must be released back into the lake. Historically, pike weighing up to 20 kg have been caught here. There are also chub over 2 kg, nase up to 6 kg, and burbot (locally known as “derać”) reaching up to 5 kg.

Recreational Opportunities

The Ljuča River, along with Plavsko Lake, offers excellent opportunities for kayaking, providing a scenic route from Gusinje to Plav and back. This region’s diverse flora and fauna, along with its favorable conditions for various recreational activities, make it a hidden gem for nature enthusiasts and adventurers alike.

Additional Insights

The Ljuča River and its surrounding landscapes are a haven for bird watchers and nature photographers. The rich biodiversity and tranquil environment make it an ideal spot for eco-tourism. Efforts to preserve the natural beauty and ecological balance of this area are essential to maintaining its status as a cherished natural resource for future generations.
