The First Oyster and Mussel Farm in Montenegro

An Oasis of Tranquility

On the route from Kotor to Perast, in Orahovac, where the river Ljuta flows into the sea, lies Montenegro’s first oyster (Ostea edulis) and mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis) farm, recently visited by the Boka News team. This serene oasis, situated on a raft above the sea and surrounded by various shellfish specimens, amphoras, and starfish, offers a complete connection with nature. Here, you can taste freshly harvested sea delicacies.

A Delight for Foreign Tourists

Foreign tourists, who frequently visit the raft, greatly appreciate and enjoy the opportunity to see how shellfish are cultivated and understand the time it takes for them to develop their unique flavors. The mastermind behind this project, adhering to all ecological standards and practicing Good Hygiene Practices and HACCP, is Nevres Đerić, a graduate engineer and the owner and host of the farm.

Achieving Excellence in Aquaculture

Since 2002, Nevres Đerić has been researching the optimal conditions for shellfish farming and has deservedly received the Excellent MNE and Solvent Rating quality and business excellence marks. His experience has shown that the mixture of fresh and saltwater creates the ideal salinity for cultivating these shellfish. Oysters are grown at depths of 7 to 28 meters and can be consumed only after two and a half to three years. During this time, they require significant care and work to reach a size of about 6 cm.

Mussels and Culinary Delight

The popular mussels (dagnje) are also grown here, a favorite of local housewives in Boka. However, the culinary experience awaiting visitors at this location is unlike anything known. When paired with good local wine, chilled by numerous sea springs, it becomes an experience worth sharing. Testimonials from visitors from 128 countries, written in the guest book, confirm their delight upon seeing the dry stone-walled pools, wind generator, and solar panels. Even those who have visited the most famous oyster farms in Japan, France, Thailand, and Norway say they have never seen or experienced anything like this and that the oysters from Boka are the best they have ever tasted.
