A Haven for Adventurers
Bratimin Vir is an excellent spot for hiking, rock climbing, and canyoning. The trail is marked, and the terrain is well-maintained up to the waterfall and the gorge. Due to the steepness of the trail in its final section, a fence made from fallen trees has been erected. In the gorge itself, there are makeshift bridges that allow you to cross Popča with caution to reach the hidden and perhaps most attractive part of this location – a beautiful oval pool above which high cliffs rise, and through an opening in the rock, in the form of a small waterfall, the river reappears after disappearing into a steep, narrow sinkhole fifty meters above.
Seasonal Changes and Safety
In spring and autumn, the water level can be very high, while in summer, the river is not as large, and it can be waded rather than climbing over rocks and wooden bridges, which can be risky for the average visitor. The entire location is filled with fallen, moist leaves, so great caution is needed to avoid slipping, as a fall here could be fatal.
However, before you reach the trail to the waterfall, you must cross Popča. There is no bridge! In the middle of August, when the water level is low, you might hop over the stones to the other side, but be prepared to wade through the river barefoot.
Legends of Bratimin Vir
Many legends surround Bratimin Vir. It is said that a long time ago, a cave hidden within held great treasure. The treasure was cursed, and all traces were lost to those who tried to reach it. Another tale speaks of two feuding mountain families whose encounters often ended in severe injuries or even deaths. Peace was unattainable until one day, two brothers saved a young man from the other family from drowning in the whirlpool of the swollen waterfall. When the young man told what had happened and who had saved him, his grandfather and father sent men to seek peace and brotherhood from their former enemies. Since then, many have found peace here, hence the name Bratimin Vir.
