Biograd Lake: Montenegro’s Largest Mountain Lake

Majestic Location

Biograd Lake, the largest mountain lake in Montenegro, is situated on Bjelasica Mountain, about 16 km northeast of Kolašin, and just 4 km from the main Kolašin-Mojkovac road. Its forested surroundings make it the most beautiful part of the Biogradska Gora National Park.

Dimensions and Origin

At its highest water level, the lake stretches 875 meters in length, 410 meters in width, and reaches a depth of 12 meters, covering an area of 270,000 square meters. During drought periods, the water level can drop to 6 meters. This glacial lake belongs to the group of reservoir lakes. The glacier descended from the highest parts of Bjelasica through the valley of the Biogradska River, carrying moraine material to an elevation of 1,000 meters above sea level. This material blocked the flow, creating the lake.

Hydrology and Ecosystem

The lake is replenished by the Biogradska River, which is 8 km long, and the Bendovac stream, with Jezerštica, the right tributary of the Tara, forming its islands. The destruction of these islands and the appearance of an abyss at the bottom of the lake threaten its survival. In cold winters, the lake freezes for 30 to 60 days.

Recreation and History

Next to the lake, tourist facilities and a fishing village have been established, offering excellent conditions for rest and recreation. When Kolasin was liberated from Turkish rule in 1878, the people of Moraca and Rovca gifted part of the forest to King Nikola Petrovic. This forest, known as “Branik Kralja Nikole,” was protected. In 1952, Biogradska Gora was proclaimed a National Park.
