Karuč, a small fishing settlement on the shores of Skadar Lake, is located about twenty kilometers from Podgorica. Historically, it served as a temporary settlement for residents of nearby villages to store their fishing gear. The spring known as Karučko Oko, renowned for its abundant fish, transformed this area from a seasonal settlement into a permanent fishing village. The annual catch of ukljeva, for which Karučko Oko was famous, amounted to tens of wagonloads.
Historical Significance
Overlooking the fishing settlement is the winter residence of Saint Petar of Cetinje (Petar I Petrović Njegoš). Today, only the ruins remain, a testament to the state’s neglect of its historical monuments. The mild climate of Karuč made it an ideal location for the winter residence.
Natural Beauty
Skadar Lake is rich in flora and fauna, with beautiful white and yellow water lilies adding to its charm. The village of Karuč is an authentic old settlement worth visiting. Once a temporary base for fishermen, Karučko Oko was renowned for its bountiful fish. The stone houses that still stand today once served as storage for fishing equipment until the next outing.
Cultural Heritage
Petar I Petrović chose this spot for his winter residence. Today, the dilapidated state of the great Petar the First’s winter residence stands as a historical relic. Karuč also hosts a lakeside restaurant offering fish specialties. The best time to visit the lake is from May to October.
