Ursulovačko Lake: A Remote Escape on Bjelasica Mountain

Ursulovačko Lake, located at 1,895 meters above sea level on Bjelasica Mountain, is one of Montenegro’s most beautiful natural wonders. This glacial lake, with its crystal-clear water and untouched nature, is a perfect destination for nature lovers and adventurers. With its stunning appearance and geological features, the lake offers an authentic and tranquil experience in the wilderness.

Geographical and Natural Features

Ursulovačko Lake is located in the Bjelasica region known as Ursulovac, and is sometimes referred to as Kurikuće Lake due to its proximity to the village of Kurikuće. The lake lies beneath Crna Glava, the highest peak of Bjelasica (2,138 meters), and because of its altitude, it is one of the coldest and clearest lakes in Montenegro. The lake is 162 meters long, 106 meters wide, and has an average depth of about 3 meters, which fluctuates depending on the water level.

The lake has a glacial origin and receives water from two nearby springs. Interestingly, the lake loses water only through evaporation, as there is no outgoing water flow.

Small Ursulovačko Lake (Blatina)

Not far from the main Ursulovačko Lake, at an altitude of 1,760 meters, is Small Ursulovačko Lake, also known as Blatina. This smaller body of water is 175 meters long, 90 meters wide, and 3 meters deep. It never dries up but faces the threat of disappearing due to climate change. Despite its size, Blatina serves an important role for the local fauna as a water source for livestock.

Flora and Fauna

Bjelasica is renowned for its biological diversity. The surrounding flora and fauna include rare plant species and wildlife such as deer, wild goats, and various bird species. This mountain region is a haven for nature lovers and researchers, providing ample opportunities for wildlife observation and photography in their natural habitat.

Activities and Tourism

Bjelasica offers numerous opportunities for active recreation. Hiking to Ursulovačko Lake requires proper preparation due to challenging terrain, but those who embark on this adventure will be rewarded with spectacular views. The area around the lake is ideal for hiking and biking, while in the winter, Bjelasica attracts visitors for skiing and other winter sports.

The lake and surrounding area also provide a perfect setting for camping and relaxation, making it an excellent choice for those looking to escape the everyday hustle and enjoy the tranquility of the mountains.

Access to the Lake

Ursulovačko Lake can be reached from the village of Kurikuće, with the road leading further into the mountain terrain. Due to its high altitude and rough terrain, it is recommended to use proper equipment and consider hiring local guides. While the journey to the lake is not easy, the adventure and the rewards of reaching this remote place are well worth the effort.
