Historical Origins
Plav was founded in the Middle Ages, with its name stemming from legends attributing it to either the Roman Emperor Plavius or the frequent floods around Plavsko Lake. The first settlements in Plav were mentioned as early as the 13th century. The town was officially established by the Turks in the 16th century during the Ottoman occupation. The local population fought against the Turks on several occasions, finally gaining liberation in 1912. The long period under Turkish rule left significant marks on the architecture, history, and culture of the area. This is why Plav boasts four mosques, more than any other town in Montenegro.
Natural Beauty and Outdoor Activities
Plav and its surroundings offer unique natural beauty, providing various activities for winter sports enthusiasts and those who enjoy hiking, fishing, and swimming in the crystal-clear waters of Plavsko Lake. This region is popular for eco-tourism, with eco-villages and eco-hotels around the lake offering ideal conditions for relaxation and rest. Several ski centers operate in the Prokletije mountains during winter.
Prokletije National Park
Prokletije National Park is of great significance, having gained national park status in 2009. It attracts tourists from all over Europe with its high peaks (over 2000 meters) and numerous glacial lakes—six within the park. The park features various ecosystems and three distinct climate zones, making it a unique national reserve with diverse flora and fauna.
Plavsko Lake: A Hub for Eco-Tourism
Plavsko Lake is undoubtedly the center of eco-tourism in the region. It is the second-largest lake on the territory of the former Yugoslavia. Its clear water is ideal for swimming in summer and turns into a vast ice rink in winter. The lake hosts boat races, rowing and diving competitions, and regattas. It also offers excellent conditions for sport fishing. The lake’s water is believed to have healing properties.
Historical Landmarks
In addition to its natural beauty, Plav has several historical sites of importance. One of the oldest buildings in Plav is the Redžepagić Tower, built in the 17th century during the Turkish occupation. Although several towers once existed in this complex, only one remains today.
The oldest mosque is the Old (Čaršija) Mosque, built in 1471. It has an interesting design with a stone main structure and a wooden entrance. It retained its modern appearance only until the 18th century. The Sultan’s Mosque, built in the 20th century, is now the center of the Muslim community in Plav.
Important Christian Shrine
Not far from the town is the important Christian shrine, the Church of the Holy Trinity. Built in the Middle Ages, it was for a long time the center of the Serbian Orthodox Church in the region.
